By painting everyday objects in black, which according to Nevelson was “the most aristocratic color,” she elevated disparate pieces into artistic compositions. While creating her assemblages, she was very meticulous and methodical, deliberately choosing objects and positioning them so as to cast shadows within the overall darkness.
